In 2001, our calls for service decreased some from the previous year. The decrease in calls for service may be partly because the fire services moved to county dispatch.

Part I Crimes were those crimes selected by the state for comparison purposes between cities and counties. Those crimes are: Homicide, Rape, Robbery, Assaults, Burglary, Theft, Auto Theft and Arson.

As can be noted in 2001, we had an increase in reported Part I Crimes over 2000, but still well below previous years.

It should be noted some residential burglaries include someone stealing property from an outside storage shed at an apartment complex. It is also classified by state standards as a "residential burglary" when someone enters an open garage and steals a bicycle. It is not always a forced entry into a home.

The 1997, 1998, and 2000, statistics for residential burglary shows the lowest number of those crimes reported to us in the past seven years, but in Year 2001 we saw the lowest ever reported home burglaries. Some arrests of burglars here and elsewhere in the county may have contributed to the drop in these crimes.

Our commercial burglaries increased a lot in 1998 compared to previous years. There was a very slight increase in 1999. Most of these crimes involve incidents of shoplifting which are classified as burglaries when we can show the thief entered the premises with the intent to commit a crime. Some of these burglaries are incidents when someone enters a student's locker at Redwood High School or a client's locker at 24-Hour Nautilus and takes property. Few commercial burglaries are forced entry during hours when the business is closed.

In 2001, we experienced a significant reduction in reported assaults. I am not sure why there were fewer reported crimes in this category.

In addition, we arrested 72 people for drunk driving and 52 people for narcotics violations. We did experience an increase in auto thefts, 39 in year 2000 compared to 60 last year. Most of our auto thefts are for transportation purposes. The majority of our stolen cars are recovered in Richmond, San Pablo and El Cerrito. We often recover vehicles stolen from the East Bay.

In closing, the Twin Cities area had a better year with reported residential burglaries and fewer assaults.
